At 19,341′, Kilimanjaro is not only the tallest mountain in Africa; it’s the tallest freestanding mountain in the world.

Kilimanjaro is one of the famed Seven Summits: the highest peaks on each continent which many climbers make it a point to conquer.

3. MADE UP OF THREE VOLCANOES

Kilimanjaro is made up of three dormant volcanoes: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. The summit, Uhuru Peak, is on Kibo.

4. A LONG HISTORY

In 1889 German explorer Hans Meyer was the first to reach the peak, guided by local Chagga tribesman Yohana Lauwo.
