ABOUT UMBWE ROUTE
The Umbwe route has a reputation for being the most challenging route on Kilimanjaro. The Umbwe is the shortest, steepest and hardest Kilimanjaro route.
The Umbwe Route is the trail for trekkers looking for a true climbing challenge. A quiet, seldom used path can be very difficult, yet very rewarding at the same time. This is the route to choose if you want to test yourself on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, far from the crowds that are found on the more common trails.
It take 6 to 7 days for trekking.
Approaching from the south, the Umbwe route is a short, steep and direct climb. After reaching Barranco Camp, the trail turns east and traverses underneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice Field on a path known as the Southern Circuit before summiting from Barafu. Descent is made via the Mweka route.
